Groundwater Levels That Change Between Tender and Dig

Tender packages often freeze a single groundwater level from a dry summer investigation. By the time foundations are excavated in late winter, that number can be optimistic.

Install at least one piezometer early and read it through the design period. Record rainfall in the same notebook; correlating the two saves arguments later.

When levels rise, revisit effective stress at founding level and any uplift on buried slabs. A modest increase can erase the factor you thought you had on a shallow pad in silty sand.

Communicate the change to the contractor with a marked-up section, not only a revised calculation sheet. Excavation methods and temporary works depend on seeing where water will appear.
