What to Pack for a Field Logging Week in the Midlands
Kit, clothing, and habits that keep descriptions consistent when the weather turns and the drill crew is waiting.
Field logging rewards preparation more than bravado. Arrive with a waterproof notebook, spare pencils, and a hand lens you have already focused in daylight.
Carry the BS EN ISO descriptive charts laminated, not on a phone screen that dies in the cold. Colour chips for soil and rock save long arguments at the core box.
Dress for standing still. Waterproof trousers and insulated gloves matter more than hiking boots designed for distance. Steel-toe footwear is mandatory on our Field School sites.
Agree abbreviations with your partner before the first hole. Mixed shorthand between loggers is the fastest way to confuse a factual report.
End each day by photographing core boxes with a scale and rewriting unclear rows while the memory is fresh. Tomorrow’s rain will not improve yesterday’s handwriting.
